DAM REMOVAL UPDATE  In late March, 2006, the U S Army Corps of Engineers employed Lowe Engineers to do a third and very detailed sonar study of the riverbed behind Eagle-Phenix and City Mills Dams. They took the data thus obtained and converted it into a topographic maps of the riverbed. Those topo maps were then sent  to the engineering firm in Denver, CO. that did the design work on the Ocoe for the '96 Olympics. After they received the topo maps, they worked up designs of ways to tweak the riverbed. Once those designs were received, they were sent to an engineering firm in Birmingham, AL to work up a cost estimate for actually removing the two dams and  executing all or some portion of the proposed plans for the riverbed. Those cost estimates have just been received and are being reviewed. As John Turner says, "the main thing is that we don't want to start taking down the dams and then realize, oops, we missed something."

Marmot Dam on the Marmot River in Oregon was removed last October. Video footage taken by Oregon Public Broadcasting of that happening is available on  our website under EVENT CALENDAR.
